It’s Time to Stop with the Fancy Pop-Ups, Sliders, and Advertisements

It’s crazy, nowadays when I visit some of my favorite sites, I have to actually figure out how to shut down the pop-up windows and advertisements during the first thirty seconds of my visit. I get it, websites need to make money, but it’s just not fun to have to drill down two or three layers to get to what I’d like to view.

Even worse is having to shut down all the fancy pop-ups and advertisements on my mobile phone. Everything is already much smaller and harder to find in the first place. So here are my suggestions for any size business that has a website.

First, don’t get sucked into making a website that’s all about capturing a visitors email or contact information. I know that what I’m saying is going against what everyone is telling you, and I don’t care, because I’d rather create the absolute best visitor experience and form a relationship with that person over time, rather than immediately capture someones email or contact information that I’m never going to do business with.

Second, before you invest a lot of money into a website redesign, make sure you run some tests to ensure that it looks absolutely flawless on a mobile phone. Sliders, pop-ups, and advertisements really don’t show well on a mobile phone, and they’re going to turn people off from continuing to stop by your site to read your content.

Third, it’s just flat out time to get back to the basics with website design, there’s just way too much complexity in the designs that are being launched right now. What if someone has a slow internet speed, they don’t want to sit there and wait for the site to load all this crazy and fancy stuff, they just want to click, check out the content, and move on, enable them to do that, and they’ll keep coming back.

Listen, I get the whole website thing, and I’m a big fan of it, but I’m just tired of being pounded on by pop-ups and advertisements that look terrible, and only push me away. I’m sharing my personal experience because I’m hoping that you can relate to it somehow, and that if you have a website, you’ll seriously think about making the visitor experience about the visitor, and not all about you capturing their information.
